GPU database

Every GPU for local AI, ranked by what it can run

VRAM decides which models fit. Bandwidth decides how fast they run. Here is how every card and unified-memory system stacks up.

Which GPU should you buy?

For most people, a used RTX 3090 is still the best value: 24GB runs 32B models at a usable speed. On a tighter budget, a 16GB card like the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB handles 12–14B models well. For the fastest single card, the RTX 5090 has 32GB and the most bandwidth of any consumer GPU. Read our full buying guide for picks at every budget.

Unified-memory systems

Macs, Strix Halo mini PCs, and DGX Spark share one big pool of memory between CPU and GPU. Slower than a big GPU, but they hold much larger models.

48GB and up

Workstation and datacenter cards that run 70B-class models on a single GPU.

32GB

Room for 32B models at high quality with long context, or mid-size MoE models.

20–24GB

The sweet spot for local AI: 27–32B models at Q4 with useful context.

16GB

Comfortable with 12–14B models and small MoE models; 24B fits at lower quants.

12GB and under

Entry level. Best with 4–9B models; 12–14B fits at Q4 with short context.

* Unified memory is shared with the CPU; by default the GPU can use roughly 65–75% of it. Prices are typical street prices when last checked and change often.

Frequently asked questions

What matters most in a GPU for running LLMs?

Memory capacity first, then memory bandwidth. Capacity decides which models fit; bandwidth decides how fast they generate text, because every generated token reads the whole active model from memory. Compute (TFLOPS) mostly affects prompt processing.

How much VRAM do I need for local AI?

12GB runs 8B-class models well. 16GB handles 12–14B models and small MoE models. 24GB is the sweet spot for 27–32B models. For 70B dense models you want 48GB or more, either across two GPUs or on a unified-memory system.

Is AMD or Intel good for running LLMs?

Yes, with caveats. AMD Radeon cards work well in llama.cpp (Vulkan or ROCm), LM Studio, and Ollama, and often cost less per GB of VRAM. Intel Arc works through llama.cpp (SYCL or Vulkan) and IPEX-LLM. NVIDIA still has the broadest, least-friction software support.
