Frequently asked questions
How much does a PC for running local LLMs cost?
A capable entry-level machine starts around $600 if you reuse an older PC and add a 12GB GPU. A single used RTX 3090 build with 24GB of VRAM costs roughly $1,500–2,000. Multi-GPU rigs that run 70B+ models start around $3,000 with used cards and go well past $10,000 with workstation GPUs.
Do I need a powerful CPU for local AI?
Not really. When the model fits in VRAM, the GPU does nearly all the work. Spend on GPU memory first; a mid-range CPU is fine. CPU, RAM bandwidth, and RAM capacity only start to matter when you offload part of a model to system memory.
How much system RAM do I need for an AI PC?
At least as much RAM as you have VRAM, and ideally double, so models load quickly and you have room to offload. 32GB is a sensible minimum for a single-GPU build; 64–128GB if you plan to run mixture-of-experts models with CPU offload.
