Can the Tesla P40 run LLMs?
The Tesla P40 has 24GB of GDDR5 and 346 GB/s of memory bandwidth, which decides how big a model fits and how fast it generates text. It comfortably runs models up to about 35B parameters: the largest in our catalog is Qwen3.6 35B-A3B at Q3_K_M (19GB with 8K context, ~58 tokens/sec). Our top all-round pick for it is Qwen3.8 27B (Q4_K_M, ~11 tokens/sec). Llama 3.3 70B Instruct only runs with partial CPU offload, at about 1.6 tokens/sec with CPU offload.

Every current model in our catalog, at the best quantization that fits in 24GB with 8K tokens of context. "Partial offload" means part of the model runs from system RAM (we assume 64GB), which is much slower.

Our take
Should you buy the Tesla P40 for AI?
The Tesla P40 is a 2016 Pascal datacenter card with 24GB of GDDR5 on a 384-bit bus for 346 GB/s. It has no tensor cores and very slow FP16, so llama.cpp runs it through FP32 code paths and prompt processing is far slower than on modern cards. The card is passively cooled for server airflow, so desktop builds need a blower or 3D-printed fan shroud, and it takes an 8-pin EPS power connector rather than a PCIe plug. Used cards sold for about $230 to $330 in October 2026. CUDA 13 no longer supports Pascal, though the R580 driver branch keeps it working for now.
What we like
- 24GB for the lowest price of any card
- Works with llama.cpp and other CUDA 12 builds
- Easy to buy in quantity
Watch out for
- Slow FP16 and no tensor cores
- Needs added cooling and an EPS power adapter
- Dropped from CUDA 13
Best for: Very low-budget 24GB or 48GB builds · Home servers with strong airflow

Frequently asked questions
How much VRAM does the Tesla P40 have?
The NVIDIA Tesla P40 has 24GB of GDDR5 with 346 GB/s of memory bandwidth on a 384-bit bus.
What is the largest LLM the Tesla P40 can run?
Fully in GPU memory, the largest model in our catalog that runs comfortably is Qwen3.6 35B-A3B (35B (3B active)) at Q3_K_M, using about 19GB with 8K context at ~58 tokens/sec.
Can the Tesla P40 run Llama 3.3 70B?
Only with partial CPU offload. At Q4_K_M the model needs about 47GB with 8K context, so part of it spills into system RAM and speed drops to about 1.6 tokens/sec with CPU offload. For usable 70B speeds you want 48GB of VRAM or more (for example two 24GB cards).
What is the best LLM to run on the Tesla P40?
Our top pick is Qwen3.8 27B at Q4_K_M, which fits in 24GB with room for 8K of context and runs at ~11 tokens/sec. See our full list of the best models for the Tesla P40 for coding, reasoning, and vision picks.
Is the Tesla P40 good for local AI in 2026?
The cheapest 24GB card, if you can cool it and accept Pascal's slow compute.
